Rounding out a trifecta of Keegan books this year is the collection of stories, all previously appearing in magazines or other collections. The tagline on the cover is, “stories of women and men”, and the collection lives up to that. In each story, we meet a man or woman who has an unusual relationship with a woman or man. Other that also being set in Ireland, those are the only connections between the stories, so each was surprising and stand-alone.
As in the other books (Foster and Small Things Like These), Keegan’s prose is spare and pitch-perfect for the characters and stories, with each having a slight-gasp moment of its own.
I’m glad to have these three small books to start my Keegan collection. I look forward to future reading (although she doesn’t have much else to get).
Fate: I’m hanging on to this one as part of my collection, and possible future rereading.
