The Last Devil to Die, by Richard Osman. Pub 2023

I am grateful to my fellow book-clubber for many things, not the least being her generous, thoughtful, and timely sharing of books. I have read the previous three books in this series, all of which were gifts from her, and I have enjoyed every one of them. This most recent one is very special for the incredibly moving experiences of the main characters, that happen within and around the various murders. I don’t recall a murder mystery that moved me to tears so much, so frequently, and so well (Iona Whishaw and her Lane Winslow series come close, but for those I’m more often in tears of joy when someone finds love or gets married).
I was struck when reading that, although this is the fourth book in four years, the events from book one through book four take place over barely a year of time. In the acknowledgements section, the author advises everyone that the Thursday Murder Club of the series will be given a well needed break from their investigations – a time to rest and heal for all involved. Osman is clearly a talented writer and story teller, and so I look forward to whatever he comes up with next.
Fate: the entire series will now go to another mystery lover.
1 – murder
4 – published in 2023
11 – chosen by fellow book-clubber
