The Thursday Murder Club, by Richard Osman. Pub 2020
This book was a gift from a fellow book clubber who shares my affection murder mysteries. This book series is a best seller in England, and it’s understandable why – it is terrific.
The eponymous club is comprised of four residents of Coopers Chase retirement community who share a penchant for true crime mysteries – unsolved murders and revisiting famous cases of the past. One day, they get their fondest wish: a few murders take place in the community, and the club takes on solving the crimes. They engineer creative ways to collaborate with the police, endearing themselves to all sides of the investigation. Throughout all the sleuthing, we get to know the club members and their comrades, making the story much more than just a murder mystery.
The pensioners that comprise the club are wonderful characters, and Coopers Chase community seems like a great place to retire, too (even with all the committees). I like the overlaps between the crimes, and the relationships between the club and the cops. Each character is well crafted and someone you want to know more about (except the two murder victims who are actually the villains of the story). It was rich, complex, enjoyable, and moving (there were tears a few times), and I loved it. Can’t wait to read the next one*.
Fate: I’ll pass along to another mystery lover.
* I have now read it, and can confirm it was as enjoyable as the first.
